drunkard's path revisited & giveaway

At first I hated this quilt top.  I tried to make a drunkard's path pattern using the lid to a pot, but forgot that I needed the last 1/4 inch would be used as the seam allowance.

Thus my edges didn't match up.  Can you see how the the circles aren't really a full circle?

Then I started seeing variations like this one, and I realized that the new modern is un-matching seams . . . YES!

watch out, quilt police, there's a new sheriff in town (or maybe I should say "there's no sheriff in town" . . .  seen too much of toystory this week :)  Here's the new drunkard's path for modern quilts . . . unmatching seams.

So, I decided to finish this quilt.  I really like how it finished.  It's made with Gardenvale by JenKingwell.  You can read more about it here.

And I am in the market for a good drunkard's path ruler, but they're so expensive!  I want to make sure I get the best one.

I have 2 options I'm looking at, Elsie's Backporch Drunkard's path ruler and Bloc Loc ruler . . . "don't need a ruler" you say?  Let me explain.  I have very low pain tolerance, short attention span, and not much patience.   I was medicated to have my babies, and yes, I would prefer to use a ruler for the drunkard's path.

GIVEAWAY:  closed.
If you can tell, I've been cleaning out my sewing studio again.  I have a left-over charm pack of noteworthy by sweetwater.  If you'd like it, please leave me a comment and if you've made a drunkard's path block, I'd love to hear about it.

  1. I have no experience with Drunkard's Path, because I don't sew curves! (I also do not sew applique or do windows. lol) I think that lovely Noteworthy Charm pack would like to join its sisters at my house....just sayin. :)

  4. Your quilt looks beautiful and very modern to me. I actually mashed the picture because it would be one I may consider doing. I have never made a Drunkards path design

  5. I wish I had experience with that block but I've been too intimidated to attempt curves yet. Yours looks great and love the un-matching seams! I love Sweetwater but don't currently own any Noteworthy fabric. I would love to dive into that charm pack! Thank you for the opportunity!

  6. I've made several drunkards path quilts, most with traditional curved piecing, and one where you sewed circles on fusible, fused them down, then cut them into quarters. Voila, instant drunkards path blocks. I'd love to win that charm pack.

  7. I was part of a quilt bee last year and one of the blocks was done in a drunkard's path pattern. I bought templates from Betty Crocker Ass, she has 3.5 and 6.5. They are very similar to Elisa's and a little bit cheaper too. I was really scared to try it and was happily surprised at how easy it was!

  10. Very creative - I like it! I have only made a drunkards path block in a sampler quilt. It can be challenging. I love all things Sweetwater and would love to win your charm pack.

  11. I've never made a Drunkard's Path but I've got a little bookmark in a book with the pattern, think I will try one one of these days.

I love yours. The prints are active enough that the non-matching seams don't stand out. I think your choice of prints makes it look very modern, though. They look beautiful together.

  13. Yeah...NO! I really, really like your version! I am not one to follow the path most taken, I like the unique stuff of life! I understand about the ruler though, I need a circle ruler to make round pieces. I ordered one and it made it to my mailbox, but like a dummy I didn't pick up my mail that one day and one of the local tweakers picked it up for me. That's $30 not so well spent and then I had to go buy a locking mailbox so this doesn't happen again. Now I have to wait to order another one! Anyway, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

  15. Your drunkard's path is great! I love the gray borders just on two sides and killer binding too! Great finish! I've made a few of the blocks here or there but not a whole quilt.

  16. No quilting police where I live! That looks lovely. You've inspired me to pull out some stash and make a block - just because I love that things don't line up. Thanks for the giveaway.

  18. Great solution to your problem. I really like the end result. Congratulations on your finish.
Good luck choosing your rulers. I have not made a full quilt with DP but have used the design in a border. If you are looking for an easy way to cut the pieces why not go for the Go Cutter. Do you have a friend who has one? That would really be quick and easy.

  19. I was working on a drunkards path quilt this weekend. I just made plastic templates because I wanted to sew the quilt by hand. Good luck finding rulers.

  20. I am so impressed! I have not tried a drunkards path, but your solution is so great!!! Love it! Thanks for sharing that it doesn't always work the way you want it to, but you can make it work even better!

  21. I have high hopes for the Clammy ruler by Latifah Saafir. It should be able to do the drunkards path along with some other shapes. Just gotta wait for it to arrive... I like that your way creates less waste since the shapes fit together when they are cut though and the finished quilt is fun!

  22. I love the look of Drunkards Path but curves terrify me!!

  23. I wish I could help with the drunkards path thing - but unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to try one yet! It's definitely on my bucket list, though. You are so sweet to share your fabric and stuff. :)

  24. I have the Marti Michelle drunkard path templates but haven't used them. I sewed garments for years so am not afraid if curves but haven't tried the pattern yet. It's on my bucket list.
